A term used to describe the protection of citizens who are not Muslims from the Muslim ruler. The Dhimi were required to wear clothes different from those of the Muslims and to wear a belt. They were also prohibited from riding horses and from building houses higher than those of Muslims;nor were they allowed to build new religious structures.
